You’re Not the Main Character
A Culture of Self-Idolatry
The idea that the world revolves around you.
Your story. Your pain. Your goals. Your glow-up.
But here’s the raw, unfiltered truth:
You’re not the main character. Jesus is.
But here’s the raw, unfiltered truth:
You’re not the main character. Jesus is.
You’re not the point. He is.
That’s not just edgy theology. That’s basic discipleship.
That’s not just edgy theology. That’s basic discipleship.
And if we don’t kill this idol of self, it’s going to kill our witness, our purpose, and maybe even our soul.
We’ve Made Ourselves the Hero of a Story We Didn’t Write
Let’s call it what it is: self-idolatry.
It shows up dressed in self-love, personal branding, or “living your truth.”
Let’s call it what it is: self-idolatry.
It shows up dressed in self-love, personal branding, or “living your truth.”
But it’s really just Genesis 3 all over again—man reaching for God’s place.
“You will be like God,” the serpent said.
“You will be like God,” the serpent said.
And we’ve been biting the same lie ever since.
In this culture, it’s all about your platform, your vibe, your authenticity.
In this culture, it’s all about your platform, your vibe, your authenticity.
We’ve built altars to ourselves on Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn and slapped a Jesus sticker on it to justify it.
But Jesus didn’t say, “Express yourself.”
But Jesus didn’t say, “Express yourself.”
He said, “Deny yourself.” (Luke 9:23)
Your Identity is In Christ, Not As Christ
Let’s be clear. You have value. Worth. Purpose.
Let’s be clear. You have value. Worth. Purpose.
But it’s not because you’re the center of the story.
It’s because Jesus made you His. That’s what gives you identity.
Galatians 2:20 breaks the ego in half:
“I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.”
Paul didn’t say, “I’m the main character of my redemption arc.”
Galatians 2:20 breaks the ego in half:
“I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.”
Paul didn’t say, “I’m the main character of my redemption arc.”
He said, “I DIED.”
And now the story is about Christ.
If your walk with God still centers on what you want, how you feel, and what people think of you, you’re not walking with Jesus.
If your walk with God still centers on what you want, how you feel, and what people think of you, you’re not walking with Jesus.
You’re walking with your brand of Jesus.
A safe, domesticated, social media-approved version who never asks you to surrender anything.
That’s not the Gospel.
That’s not the Gospel.
That’s a spiritual mirror—just reflecting your ego back to you.
You Can’t Worship Jesus and Promote Yourself
Jesus said in John 5:44:
“How can you believe when you accept glory from one another but do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?”
Translation:
Jesus said in John 5:44:
“How can you believe when you accept glory from one another but do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?”
Translation:
As long as you’re obsessed with being seen, you won’t see Me.
You cannot live for applause and still carry your cross.
You cannot live for applause and still carry your cross.
You cannot crave attention and expect anointing.
Some of us need to go on a social media fast—not to detox from dopamine, but to detox from delusion.
Some of us need to go on a social media fast—not to detox from dopamine, but to detox from delusion.
You’re not building God’s Kingdom if you’re only using it as a ladder to build your own.
True Identity Comes From Submission, Not Spotlight
Identity in Christ isn’t just about comfort—it’s about calling.
Identity in Christ isn’t just about comfort—it’s about calling.
And calling always costs something.
You’ll never walk in full authority until you surrender full control.
You’ll never walk in full authority until you surrender full control.
You’ll never know real peace until you stop trying to be impressive and start trying to be obedient.
Colossians 3:3:
“For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.”
Hidden.
Colossians 3:3:
“For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.”
Hidden.
Not trending.
Not viral.
Not on stage.
Hidden.
You want Kingdom power? Go get Kingdom posture.
You want Kingdom power? Go get Kingdom posture.
You want spiritual authority? Get low. Serve. Repent. Obey.
Stop chasing the camera. Start chasing the Cross.
It’s Not Your Story—It’s His
Jesus isn’t your sidekick. He’s not your co-star.
Jesus isn’t your sidekick. He’s not your co-star.
He’s the Author, the Finisher, the Lamb, the Lion, the King of kings.
And you?
And you?
You’re the servant.
You’re the vessel.
You’re the branch, not the Vine.
You’re the background singer in Heaven’s symphony.
And if that offends your ego?
And if that offends your ego?
Good.
That’s your flesh begging for center stage again.
That’s your flesh begging for center stage again.
Let the main character die.
Let your name shrink so His can rise.
Let the algorithm starve while Heaven takes notice.
Because the only story that matters is the one where the King reigns, the Cross wins, and you bowed your life to the One who actually deserves the glory.
